Regular Car Maintenance Increases Longevity And Reduces Costs

Most car owners are aware of the importance of performing regular car maintenance. Unfortunately, those same car owners willfully neglect the performance of such maintenance, often putting it off despite knowing that proper car care will result in better performance and untold savings over the life of the car. The maintenance that must be performed is not complex or expensive either. It is simple and quick and can save car owners a great deal of trouble further on down the road.

Catch Problems Before they Occur

One of the best benefits of conducting routine car maintenance is the ability to catch any minor problems before they turn into major ones. Most major issues relating to cars could have been avoided if car maintenance had simply been performed on a regular basis. If the owner is the one performing the maintenance, he or she must be aware of the telltale signs of developing issues. Taking it to a trained mechanic will ensure any issues are identified as soon as they occur.

Save Money

Any car owner knows that major repairs are very expensive. Between parts and labor, a major repair can end up costing nearly as much as a decent used car. Unfortunately, many owners decide they will take their chances on having to spend big later by forgoing the cost of regular car maintenance now. This is a recipe for disaster, as ignoring necessary maintenance greatly enhances the likelihood that major repairs will be needed in the future.

Car Maintenance Checklist

Perhaps the simplest thing a car owner can do is to make a maintenance checklist based on the recommended service intervals in their vehicle's owner's manual, and complete the items on the list when they are due. As a basic rule of thumb, vehicle owners should:

  • Replace fuel filter every 2 years or 24,000 miles
  • Maintain fluid levels
  • Replace battery every 48 to 60 months
  • Replace air filter every 12 months or 12,000 miles
  • Change spark plugs every 30,000 to 50,000 miles
  • Check belts; replace timing belt after 60,000 to 90,000 miles; engine belts after 30,000 miles
  • Check tire treads; replace every six to ten years
  • Replace brakes after 2 years or 24,000 miles

By following this simple checklist and keeping your car maintained, you will keep yourself and those around you safer on the road – and end up saving a lot of money in repair costs down the road.
